AROUND THE WORLD IN 3 PATTERNS!
This is a three-project unit designed for elementary students. Below is a brief description of each lesson that builds upon the next, followed by downloadable handouts, artist information, and the official lesson plan!
Brighten My Day with Britto!

Using the contemporary pop artist Romero Britto as inspiration, students will begin to explore pattern in artwork by learning about shapes, marks, and basic color theory. By using marker as a medium, this lesson allows the students to explore bold lines and colors inspired by an artist that is influenced by North and South America, while being able to focus on what a pattern is without having to learn a completely foreign medium.
Original Aboriginals

Students will explore tribal and Aboriginal artwork in this lesson about native Australian dot paintings. As a class, we will investigate the meanings of symbols both in our culture and others across the globe. We will also touch on animal symbolism, and each student will be challenged to create a dot painting of an animal that they believe best represents themselves. Students will be expected to create a design using interesting color combinations and must utilize their knowledge about color from the previous lesson.
Mandala Madness
![Picture](/uploads/1/8/7/9/18795494/7660217.jpg)
In this lesson, students will be submerged in the world of Eastern artwork, being introduced to the many types of pattern based art from the East, such as henna, paisley designs, and intricate Islamic decor. Pulling knowledge from the previous two lessons, students will be asked to create a mandala that represents a wish for something completely un-materialistic. The medium will be left open to their own interpretation, but should be chosen from oil pastels, colored pencils, and/or markers. During their personal mandala making, each student will take time from their own project to contribute to the class unity mandala, which will be a collaboration of what the class values, such as friendship, freedom, etc. This will also be the first time that group critique is introduced in this unit and will bring everyone together to reflect and draw conclusions from our 9 week diversity unit.
